Who is who in shaping the Armenia-Turkey debate

Armenia-Turkey: The Great Debate

For more than three years ESI's multinational research team, based in Berlin, Istanbul and Yerevan, has published research on the past, present and future of Turkish-Armenian relations. These have included the report "Noah's Dove Returns" on Turkish-Armenian relations (April 2009), "Red herrings in Turkish-Armenian Debate" (June 2009), an op-ed on the issue of genocide recognition) and a dedicated website on "Turkey-Armenia: the Great Debate" (August 2009).

Though bilateral relations have not yet normalized, and the border remains closed, some encouraging trends have continued. There have been an increasing number of visits, political dialogue, exchanges and conferences. There has been more media coverage and informed debate in at least some influential circles. More individuals and institutions in Armenia and in Turkey are working on bilateral relations and related issues than ever before.

In order to make a further contribution and facilitate debate a team of ESI analysts has put together the following "Turkey Armenia manual".

We are also pleased that the award winning ESI documentary film series "Return to Europe" – describing the transformations in South East Europe in the past decade – has been dubbed into Armenian. It has been shown on the Armenian TV station "Yerkir Media TV" early this year. Every broadcast of the film was followed by local expert discussions on the topics touched upon in the films and their relevance for Armenia where possible. The series will continue to be shown in Armenia. For more details, visit the film website.

Big problems in Baku, and the man to deal with them
By David J. Kramer  Tuesday, August 17, 2010 - 10:50 AM

In my last posting, I praised Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's early July trip to Poland and Georgia but noted I had reservations about her stop in Baku. Despite the passage of a few weeks, those concerns have not gone away. Nor have worries about the direction in which Azerbaijan is heading. Making matters worse, the United States has been without an ambassador in Azerbaijan for more than a year and the current nominee has been delayed in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee (SFRC).

In what was an otherwise good trip to the region, Clinton offered the wrong answers during a joint press availability with Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov. In her opening comments, Clinton offered hope that some "difficult cases" involving media freedom and the status of civil society would get resolved in Azerbaijan. But then in response to a question concerning human rights in the country, Clinton touted "a lot of progress" in Azerbaijan in the last 18 years. Her amplification of that initial response only muddied the waters further:
