of Regional Sectoral Cooperation
Textile Sphere
Armenia, under the Soviet Union, had an active
textile industry with qualified workers. With properly directed
capital investment, the textile factories in Armenia can produce
first quality textiles for trade on the world market. TABDC
recognizes the potential Armenia’s textile factories
hold and are organizing fact-finding missions into the country
to see how to harness this industry’s potential to develop
an industrial export base for both countries.
Armenia has unfilled capacity to United States
import quotas. Thus, Turkey and Armenia can reap the benefits
of “piece-work” and produce large quantities of
goods for mutual benefit. Currently, Turkey is subject to
United States quotas. This initiative will lead to joint Turkish-Armenian
textile products. Contact between the textile sectors of both
countries has been established and first samples have been
shipped to USA.
Agriculture:
Turkish-Armenian Business Development Council
is presently developing an agricultural project named “Virtual
Agricultural Wholesale Market” in cooperation with
the Yerevan based International Center for Human Development
(ICHD) with the support of American University. Our aim is
to contribute to the economic development of the region with
practical methods of cooperation. The project will be launched
in March 2002, and will lead to the organization of a website
promoting information exchange and commercial cooperation,
and to the set-up of a regional chamber of commerce. The target
regions are Shirak, Tavush, Lory from Armenia and Kars, Erzurum
from Turkey. Collected information will include market surveys,
harvest forecasts, cultivation methods, fertilizers sources
and farm equipments.
Information Technology (IT) and electronics:
We consider IT development as a major tool
to achieve our goals. Armenia is very developed in software
production, programming and computer parts; TABDC has organized
many business links between Turkish IT and Armenian IT companies
and has been stressing the importance of regional e-initiatives.
Drawing up and implementing regional information strategies
will further existing economic interactions between Turkey
and South Caucasus. TABDC is firmly supporting the regional
e-development initiatives developed by the European Union
and the World Bank, aiming to integrate South Caucasus into
the global information community.
Export of Cement from Armenia to Turkey
Leading Turkish cement factories are interested
in Armenia’s cement market. TABDC facilitated direct
contacts between principle groups. As cement is a low profit
commercial commodity, low cost transportation is an important
issue in cement trade. TABDC is working towards solutions
to eliminate transportation costs between two countries.
Import and Export of Food Stuff
Armenia is interested in Turkey’s flour,
oil, sugar, etc… Turkey in Armenia’s soybean extract,
tomato paste, etc… There is a great demand for the food
products of and on both sides. Politics again is stifling
great possibilities that could easily be realized.
